Recently I've noticed bases or dolls have been making front page and then usually there is a big shitstorm about it. Some of which I find hilarious, others actually make me ashamed to be a base & doll artist.

As base creators we must, no matter what at the very least, credit the original artist of our traces bases. This isn't optional, this is a must.

We ask for credit of the base maker, and a link back when used, so people can find the base and the original image to give the overall credit. Personally, I don't ask for credit because 'I worked super hard on this base', which quite technically, I didn't do as much work as the original artist, I ask for credit so people can at least find the original artwork.

As doll artists, we must credit the base we used. No shit.

In order to find the original image, one must find the base. Saying that you have used a base also notifies that you have dolled the image and not drawn it, thus giving the credit. Not crediting the base artist and linking usually leads to a shitstorm, and you look pretty stupid as well.

Do not ever use, 'I lost the original image' as an excuse.

You just used that original image, go find it. I don't care if you have to spend hours on google images trying to find it, if you can find in the first place, you can find it again, and if you can't find it, don't upload the base.

Bases & dolls can help with art, but it is a shame that people are abusing it.

Bases with hair or clothes already on them, unless theme of image, should not even be considered a base, it should be considered a full on trace. Like what can you even do with this base? Recolour it slightly? However full on bases can help, in fact it has helped me as an artist. Hair flow, hair styles, pixel/digital works, clothing designs, clothing flow, shading and highlighting. We all do this in regular drawing, just bases lay out a 'base' figure to do so on so we can practise these basic designs. Can bases help with anatomy? Well it depends, if you have a base with bad anatomy, you can fix it yourself and improve your anatomy. I have done this several times and I found that I improved the anatomy of the base, and strengthened my own skills.

You should be taking more time on dolls.

I'm sick and tired of looking at someone who uploads daily, who has shit for dolls and never improves. As an artist you should be trying to improve, quality over quantity. Bases are used to improve your skills.

Bases that are from screenshots, only show hands, feet, half of a face, only half of a body, or etc, etc, are just as useless.

Now this is fucking stupid. Get real guys, what are you even going to do with this base, draw tiny little bangs, change the eye colour, colour nails? There is no point to these bases.

When a base makes front page, don't bitch at the base artist.

Not their fault. Just saiyan.

You should not be getting DA points or money for bases or dolls.

Then it would be extremely unfair to the artist. Lets just keep this clean and do it for fun purposes. Getting money involved can make legal issues and fuck knows what else.

Ask before you doll, is a stupid rule.

For base artists, this rule is just ridiculous. Especially when you go all bitchy-maniac about it and shut down everything. I understand you don't want lesser artists using your prized bases, but lets face it, they still are going to and their isn't anything you can do to stop it. As another fact, I'm not going to wait for your permission before I doll something, I'm just gonna' do it.

Don't group all base artists or doll artists in the same boat.

There are some really amazing base artists and dollers in this community of pixel works that really do a good job. But hearing comments like "my respect for base users, makers, supporters and all just dropped a little more" really makes me wanna' scream about how poor artists don't make the good ones. I could say that all digital artists look like shit, because I saw a few poor artists work, but that doesn't give any credit to greater artists, just makes them feel like shit.

Traced Bases, Bases, and Pixel Dolls are art.

It's DeviantART official for one thing, and you have to look into these pieces of art and realize the creativity within. I know I sound like that crazy hippie art teacher right now but when you think about it everything around you is an art. Cooking, Dancing, Writing, Plays, Wood Working, House Designing, Paper Folding, Layouts, Webpages, Floors, Bedsheets, Clocks, Calanders, Computers, Music, Drawing, Painting, Role Playing, Card Games (on motorcyles), Figurines, Animation, Television Shows, etc, etc. As long as you use your imagination, it is art.

People also forget that not everyone draws on the base itself.
I don't generally need a base but when posting publicly on a website, I rather people(Not saying my art is so awesome it's going to happen but the possibility is still there) steal or repost deviations I don't necessarily have a huge problem over them doing so. I still care if it's stolen but not as much as the works I spend way more time on.
